Troll Baby VS The Alabama Rig

Hello All,

Sorry for my long absence from my Blog.

As many of you know the NEW big craze is the Alabama Rig. Just out of curiosity I bought a couple to check out. This is what I found.

First off this thing is heavy to throw and hits the water like a brick.Secondly it will tangle on you if you do not throw it JUST RIGHT. Thirdly the presentation is just guess work on how deep you are. I did catch a few fish with it. It is very similar to the Troll Baby in appearance and both look like a small pod of bait fish.I have known for years that this presentation works. Lastly I found ( What I Already Knew) was that if you gave them time to get a real good look at it you caught less fish.

How I setup the test:

First I found some fish. I turned around and setup my usual Troll Baby set up running 2 feet above them. I caught fish 3 out of 4 passes. I pulled off about 100 yards, grabbed my bait caster and came back on my trolling motor. I snuck back to the area and over thew them and slow rolled it back through them. I did not do well at all until I ripped it, let it drop, ripped, etc. I caught a few then it just stopped. I cruised around on my trolling motor looking for them on my graph. Most of them where nowhere to be found. I suspect that either the boat staying close to them, or the big splash of the Alabama Rig hitting the water spooked them. Of course this is impossible for me to prove.

Of course I am bias since I make the Troll Baby however I think the trolling approach is less disturbing than throwing. The big splash time after time makes them wary and scatters the bait fish that are present. The second advantage with trolling vs throwing is staying in the zone the whole time your lure is in the water. My thinking is this. If you KNOW the fish are holding in 15'-20' why not keep your lure in that zone? One more thing that I would like to point out is this. Once you catch one while trolling you and your boat are some distance from the fish and not right on top of them. All of the noise, excitement will spook them.

Overall both are good rigs and I think the PROS caught on to what I have known for sometime now. The larger profile is easier to see than a single lure. Tournaments will not allow trolling for bass so they needed a presentation similar to the Troll Baby that they could throw!!!

Thanks for reading Kevin

Recent Report

Hi again and thanks for stopping by. we went a week ago or so and found some nice 5-7 hybrid in Big Beaver. They were back in the shallows before going under bridge over bridge. We ran the BABYS on mono straight out the back and did well. The pattern seems to be late in the day and shallow ( 5'-10'). I also got a report from a friend that late in the day they are tearing the shad up in Little Beaver.

Things will be picking up soon as the water warms. I expect a lot of surface action with the warm days.

New Items

Hello Again,

Sorry to have taken so long to repost. I have been busy lately. I spoke at the September meeting of the Appalachian Striper Club. I had a good time and meet a lot of nice folks.

I also loaded up and went to Lake Lanier for a couple of days. I had outboard problems and spent most of my time working on that.I finally got it close to right when it was time to come home!

I am excited to tell everyone that I am now selling 27# Leadcore line and Dipsy Divers in Size 0 and Size 1. I was sending folks to others sites to buy these items and they had to pay shipping again so I hope this makes it easier for everyone.

I promise a Lake Hartwell fishing report real soon.I still have a Gremlin in my outboard I got to find. I am close to working it out but not quite there.

October News

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by.

I would like to thank everyone for their recent purchases. The response for the lead core line and Dipsy Divers has been great.

I have been fishing a lot the last week and the news is not that great. The fish are moving back up the lake. I have been marking LOTS OF BIG fish between 35' and 45' That's the good news. The bad news is they won't hit nothing! The lake is starting to turn over. I have caught some trolling about 5-6 colors but it is spotty. There are lots of fish near Waldrop's but again I can not get them to hit. In addition some of the guides that I work with are having the same experience.  I fished this group several hours at different times of day. I was only able to pick up one fish. try finding fish that are around 20-30 feet and don't waste your time on the deep ones, that is my advise. when I changed up and just went to fishing 20'-25' things started happening. I was not marking many fish but I would catch one. Seems like they are boat shy or something.

I am filming a TV show with SC outdoor news On Monday the 11th. Rick Owens of Rick's Guide service is going to be pulling Troll Babies with me. His partner may also help with his boat. Three boats all pulling Troll Babies!!! Ought to be Large.I am praying for good weather and a good day. I will let you know how we do and when it will air.

Anyone having any comments please feel free to join in.

Welcome

Hi and welcome to the Troll Baby Blog.

The focus of this blog is to help folks catch fish using the Troll Baby. I live on Lake Hartwell and fish often. In the near future I intend to make some more U-Tube videos. The first one will cover using a Dipsy Diver to get your Troll Baby down. I have had some good trips lately using a 5'-6' mono leader tied to the Troll Baby behind a #1 Dipsy Diver. you can set them to side plane and cover a lot of ground.I have been running 4 rods at one time. Two side planing #1's, two straight planing # 0's out the back. This lets me cover about 30' a pass. This is a quick way to find fish in open water. It takes two good people to handle the work load two poles a piece and someone has the boat! so don't plan on stopping.I use this method to find them then go down to two lines.

The fishing on Lake Hartwell has been spotty most of the fish are down the lake from the mouth of LLC  to the dam. A lot of boats where in the mouth of Powder Bag last night. Most of the fish I have caught lately have been in tight schools suspended in open water(the main lake channel). I got a little lucky this past Tuesday and passed over these schools 4 different times 3 times both lines went at the same time, the other time I caught 1. They were on the move, after I went out and got my lines out and returned they were gone. I would do wide S turns and find them 50 Yards away. Then come back and nothing. After about 30 minutes I would give up and move on only to find them again 1/2 mile away!!!

I plan to go out in the morning with all the wave runners LOL. I will let you know how I come out.
